ANN ARBOR, MI --- During an industry conference this month, a General Motors executive said the company has already built 30 Chevrolet Volts for testing purposes, Ann Arbor Business Review reported.

GM plans to build another 80 Volts in the early summer for additional testing, said Bob Kruse, GM's executive director of global vehicle engineering for hybrids, electric vehicles and batteries. Kruse spoke at the Center for Automotive Research's "Advanced Battery Manufacturing in Michigan" conference, held at the Ann Arbor Ypsilanti Marriott.

"Based on our successful experience with our early development vehicles, we know how to deliver on the promise of 40 miles of petroleum-free driving," Kruse said.

The Volt, set for release in late 2010, will be able to travel 40 miles on a single charge of electricity without using gasoline.
