Monroe County Executive Recognizes County’s Green Fleet Ranking

November 08, 2010

ROCHESTER, NY - Monroe County's Fleet Division was recognized by County Executive Maggie Brooks for its ranking as the 17th best government "Green Fleet" in North America by the 100 Best Fleets program. The Green Fleet awards were announced at the Green Fleet Conference in San Diego on Oct. 19.

"This award is indicative of the progress that Monroe County has made toward our goal of eliminating traditional gas vehicles by 2012," Brooks said in a release. "Our 'Green Fleet' has become the envy of municipalities nationwide, with our efforts making it the benchmark of sustainability and taxpayer protection through reduced energy costs."

Fleets were examined based on qualifications that include fleet composition and utilization, fuel usage and emissions, future planning, and education and support programs. This year's judges were Courtney Bozic from Clean Cities New York; David Mills, City of Oceanside, Calif.; and Paul Condran, City of Culver City, Calif.

Monroe County's Fleet Division oversees 1,100 vehicles, including the Sheriff's Office and Greater Rochester International Airport fleets. Over the past year, the County has increased the amount of its flex-fuel vehicles in the Sheriff's Office by 67 percent and other County flex-fuel and hybrid vehicles by 20 percent and 40 percent, respectively.

Monroe County also operates its Green Fueling Station, which provides 100 percent alternative fuels to its traditional gasoline, flex-fuel, and hybrid vehicles. The County recently accepted a NYSERDA grant to add liquid propane gas to its fleet and fueling station. The funding will go toward installing a LPG pump and will also retrofit several light-duty trucks.

The County Fleet has also been honored with the Rochester Business Journal's Environmental Leadership Award and several American Public Works Association awards, according to the County. Monroe County was named as one of the 100 Best Fleets in the nation in 2010 and 2009.
